This pretty stone cottage, set on the edge of the North Yorkshire National Park, oozes country charm. The natural slate roof and pale Yorkshire stone walls gave this home, dating back to the 1700’s, huge kerb appeal when Mr and Mrs Rule were browsing for a new home back in 2011. After moving into their new home, it became apparent that something was detracting from the outside – “it became immediately apparent that the uPVC windows were end of life as they were probably about 20years old. There were a number of windows where the seals were blown, faulty or no handles and locks which were not working meaning we were unable to open some windows. Both the front door and the back stable door leaked when it rained, were draughty most of the time and would stick in the winter months. Also, the style of the windows just didn’t fit the age of the house.”
The house sits within a conservation area which was created after the plastic windows had originally been installed. Therefore, from a planning perspective, there was no restriction stopping the homeowner from replacing like-for-like. Mr and Mrs Rule, however, decided to opt for our traditional timber box sash windows, saying “We felt that due to the age of the house, and its prominent position within the village, wooden sash windows would be more in keeping with the style of the house.”
Finished in ‘Straw’ outside and white inside, these beautiful hardwood sash windows complement the age and style of the home whilst providing plenty of ventilation and adequate fire escape. “Ultimately, we choose Timber Windows based on the quality of the product, and, coming from an engineering background, we really appreciated the engineered nature of the construction. We were also keen to have a traditional sash weight mechanism which the other suppliers were not able to provide” Mr and Mrs Rule concluded “The new windows and doors have completely changed the look and feel of the house both inside and out-side. Inevitably we worried whether we had made the right decisions but all those fears completely disappeared once the first window was installed. We couldn’t have hoped for a better result, it has transformed the outside prompting some really lovely comments from neighbours who I think appreciate the investment we have made both into the house and the village. The house now looks its age in a good way. From a practical perspective, everything works and nothing leaks so we are very pleased”
