A Brief History
The Edwardian period began when Edward VII took to the throne after the death of Queen Victoria in 1901, and it brought with it an uplifted sense of design. Influenced by the arts and crafts movement, the interior and exterior of Edwardian properties upheld a classical and decorative aesthetic, much lighter than the previous Victorian period.
Inspired by Tudor timber-framed buildings, houses often mirrored the timeless design. Set back from the road to preserve privacy, properties had wider front entrances with decorative porches that are distinctive to the Edwardian period. Front doors focused on simple elegance, and regularly had side-windows with etched or coloured glass that not only allowed more light to flow into the home but continued to maintain homeowner’s privacy.
Following the Victorian style, Edwardian doors were panelled but had raised mouldings to deepen the appearance, a characteristic that is synonymous with the period. During this period the general rule was the more decorative the door, the grander the house which was exemplified through the popular engraved glazing.
